Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has confirmed her government’s steadfast support for Ukraine, despite acknowledging potential political repercussions. In an interview for an upcoming book, Meloni expressed that while some Italian voters may oppose the ongoing military and economic aid to Kyiv, she believes it aligns with Italy’s national interests.
Meloni underlined the importance of defending an international order based on rule of law, cautioning against a world where powerful nations can impose their will through force, which she stated would not favor Italy. Her remarks come amidst internal disagreements within Italy’s governing coalition over the continuation of aid to Ukraine.
Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the League party, Matteo Salvini, has consistently questioned the policy, expressing a desire to halt Italy’s support for Ukraine. In contrast, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has reiterated Italy’s commitment, indicating that another assistance package is currently in preparation.
The differing stances within the coalition highlight potential divisions, but Meloni has made it clear that Italy’s support for Ukraine will persist under her leadership. Her comments emphasize maintaining a principled foreign policy aligned with Italy’s interests, despite the domestic political costs it might incur.
