Luxembourg City Plans to Increase CCTV Cameras in City Centre for Security

Luxembourg City is seeking to enhance its security measures by expanding CCTV surveillance in the capital’s city centre. This move comes after Mayor Lydie Polfer formally requested permission from Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden to install additional cameras. The municipal council has given its initial approval, but the specifics regarding the number and placement of cameras are still under consideration.

The determination of final camera locations will be guided by police assessments of security needs and identification of priority areas. Mayor Polfer acknowledged that while CCTV cameras cannot prevent all crimes, they are valuable tools for investigators in identifying suspects and reconstructing incidents.

Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer highlighted that surveillance has already been increased in the Gare district and Bonnevoie due to rising security concerns and reported offences. He emphasized that the city is committed to equipping police with the necessary resources to perform their duties effectively.

This proposal aligns with requests from local business owners and residents who are advocating for stronger security measures to combat pickpocketing and other crimes. Supporters of the initiative believe that CCTV footage could play a crucial role in aiding police investigations and deterring potential criminal activity.
