Austria is exploring the possibility of joining Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications project, a move that highlights the countries’ intent to enhance their defence and security collaboration. This development follows a recent meeting in Luxembourg where Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner and her Luxembourg counterpart, Yuriko Backes, discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in areas such as defence, space, and cybersecurity.
During the visit, Tanner engaged in discussions with satellite operator SES regarding Austria’s prospective involvement in the GovSat 2 initiative. She emphasized the growing importance of secure satellite communications in the context of increasing geopolitical tensions. Tanner underscored that bolstering this cooperation would not only enhance the resilience of state communications but also contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy.
The GovSat 2 project aims to deliver secure communication services for Luxembourg’s defence sector, the European Union, NATO, and partner nations, with its launch scheduled for 2029. This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening transnational defence capabilities and ensuring secure information exchange across the continent.
In addition to discussing satellite communications, Austria and Luxembourg solidified their commitment to mutual defence interests by signing a letter of intent. This agreement seeks to deepen cooperation in various defence-related domains, including cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. Although Austria has yet to announce its potential investment in GovSat 2, the agreement signifies a strong intent to collaborate on multiple fronts.
