Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reached a historic milestone, as her administration became the longest-serving government in the history of the Italian Republic. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan extended his congratulations to Meloni, commending her achievement and expressing optimism about the continued strengthening of ties between Türkiye and Italy.
Meloni’s government surpassed the previous record of 1,412 continuous days in power, set by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s second administration from 2001 to 2005, by completing 1,413 consecutive days in office. Having taken office in October 2022 as Italy’s first female prime minister, Meloni has cultivated a strong diplomatic relationship with Erdoğan, frequently engaging in discussions on a range of bilateral and regional issues.
The collaboration between Türkiye and Italy has seen advancements across various sectors, including trade, investment, defense, energy, and migration. Both nations have also coordinated efforts on regional concerns such as the situations in Libya and Ukraine. This partnership was highlighted during the fourth Türkiye-Italy Intergovernmental Summit held in Rome in April 2025, where Meloni and Erdoğan co-chaired discussions and signed several agreements aimed at bolstering their strategic and economic ties.
The two leaders most recently convened on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara in July, where they reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing trade, mutual investments, and cooperation in defense and other strategic areas. Their ongoing dialogue reflects a shared vision for deepening the relationship between their countries, underscoring the significance of Meloni’s leadership in fostering international partnerships.
