Meloni Urges von der Leyen to Apply Stability Pact Exemptions to Energy

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has reached out to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, urging for a revision of the Stability and Growth Pact to allow exemptions for energy-related measures alongside defense spending. Meloni’s proposal aims to mitigate the economic repercussions of the energy-price surge caused by the ongoing conflict in Iran.

In her correspondence, Meloni requested the European Union’s executive body to broaden the National Escape Clause. Initially designed for defense expenditures, she believes this clause should also encompass investments and initiatives aimed at tackling the energy crisis. According to Meloni, failing to adapt the clause could complicate the government’s ability to justify any reliance on the SAFE program, the EU’s financial assistance mechanism for defense investments, to the public.

Despite Meloni’s appeal, the European Commission has maintained its stance on the Stability and Growth Pact, indicating no plans for alteration. The Commission reiterated that its current position regarding any potential suspensions or exemptions remains unchanged. It emphasized that member states have been provided with several options that allow them to operate within fiscally responsible parameters.

The call for action comes amid heightened economic strain, as European countries grapple with the financial impacts of the energy crisis exacerbated by geopolitical tensions. Meloni’s request highlights the balancing act faced by EU nations as they attempt to shield their economies while adhering to fiscal constraints.
