Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming it is hindering investigations into the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots who allegedly disappeared during a recent conflict. Qatar, however, has dismissed these allegations, firmly denying that the pilots are being held in its custody. An Iranian armed forces official, Mohammad Bagherzadeh, expressed frustration over the delay, stating that an Iranian Air Force expert team has been awaiting approval to visit Qatar for months to look into the situation. He called on Doha to grant access to the team and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene.
Previously, Iran announced the recovery of the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who reportedly died during an attack involving the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. In response to the accusations, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, categorically denied that any Iranian pilots were detained. According to al-Ansari, Qatar had made contact with the pilots after they allegedly breached Qatari airspace but resorted to defensive measures when attempts to communicate went unanswered.
Qatar stated its search and rescue teams actively conducted operations to find the missing pilots and their remains. The Qatari authorities also mentioned that they coordinated with Iran for the transfer of the remains of one pilot who had been recovered. Furthermore, Qatar claims that Iranian officials were invited in April to dispatch a team to the country to obtain details about the search and rescue efforts, yet Iran did not respond to this invitation.
This diplomatic dispute unfolds amidst ongoing tensions between Iran, the United States, and other regional nations following a conflict earlier this year. Despite these strains, Qatar has assumed a significant diplomatic role, striving to ease hostilities and facilitate dialogue among the involved parties.
