Italy’s Inflation Reaches 5.4% in October Due to Rising Energy Costs

Italy’s annual inflation rate jumped to 5.4% in October, up from 4.2% the previous month, marking the highest level since August 2023. This surge is primarily attributed to escalating energy prices, influenced in part by geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Energy costs experienced a significant rise, with the annual growth rate climbing from 22.6% in September to 31.4% in October. Specifically, prices for regulated energy products soared from 25.8% to 59.5%, while non-regulated energy prices increased from 22.5% to 29.4%.

Besides energy, food prices also added to the inflationary pressure. Unprocessed food items saw inflation increase from 5.5% to 7.5%. Meanwhile, processed food prices, including alcohol, recorded a smaller decline of 0.2%, compared to a 0.6% decrease previously.

The transport sector contributed to the inflation uptick as well, with service prices in this category rising from an inflation rate of 1.6% to 3.1%. This broad increase in costs underscores the ongoing financial strain on Italian households.

Overall, Italy’s consumer price index rose by 0.9% in October compared to September, illustrating the persistent pressure on household budgets amid rising living costs.
