Meloni Urges EU for Budget Flexibility Amid Rising Energy Costs and Inflation

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged for comprehensive, long-term strategies to address escalating energy costs, emphasizing that ongoing emergency measures are insufficient for sustainable solutions. Speaking at the Assolombarda assembly in Milan, Meloni highlighted the Italian government’s allocation of over €60 billion in recent years to mitigate high energy expenses for households and businesses. These efforts included reducing surcharges on energy bills, adjusting fuel excise duties, and encouraging energy companies to cap prices.

Meloni pointed to geopolitical tensions involving Iran, disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, and instability in the Red Sea as contributors to increased costs of energy, raw materials, and transportation. These factors, she noted, have intensified inflation and placed substantial pressure on families, businesses, and public finances.

The Prime Minister also expressed concern over the European Union’s budget rules, arguing that inflation-driven public spending is limiting fiscal capacity for investment and economic growth. At the upcoming European Council meeting, she intends to advocate for greater budget flexibility to accommodate costs arising from circumstances beyond the control of national governments.

Addressing the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS), Meloni called for reforms, warning that the current system could disadvantage European industries compared to international competitors. She underscored the need to protect domestic manufacturing, industrial supply chains, and jobs while still pursuing environmental objectives.

As part of Italy’s broader energy security strategy, Meloni noted the country’s expansion of renewable energy capacity and efforts to bolster domestic oil and gas production. These measures are aimed at enhancing Italy’s energy independence and stability in the face of volatile global energy markets.
