Polish authorities have thwarted an alleged assassination plot against a Ukrainian-American citizen in Warsaw, reportedly orchestrated with Russian backing. Prime Minister Donald Tusk highlighted the unprecedented nature of this case, marking it as the first known attempt by a Russia-linked actor to target a US citizen on the soil of another NATO member. The intended target was identified by Polish officials as a US citizen of Ukrainian descent, perceived as a threat by the Russian government.
A suspect, accused of being recruited by Russian intelligence services, was apprehended in Poland on August 7 and is currently being held in custody for a three-month period. This operation was executed in collaboration with US intelligence services, according to Poland’s minister responsible for overseeing intelligence agencies. The incident has heightened concerns across Europe about Russian operations aimed at political adversaries, supporters of Ukraine, and others deemed hostile by Moscow.
European authorities have previously intercepted suspected plots involving assassination, sabotage, and arson, allegedly tied to Russian intelligence networks. Prime Minister Tusk cautioned that Russia might attempt to eliminate individuals it finds inconvenient across various countries. He emphasized the importance of Poland and its allies remaining vigilant and prepared to thwart such operations.
The Russian government has not yet provided a response to these allegations. Meanwhile, the US State Department acknowledged awareness of the reports but stated it had no further information to share. This latest incident contributes to a growing series of events across Europe that Western officials have attributed to suspected Russian intelligence activities, particularly since the onset of the war in Ukraine.
