Hydrone Xc05 Wins Gold at A’ Design Awards in Aerospace Category

Tianmushan Laboratory’s Hydrone Xc05, a hydrogen-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), has been awarded the prestigious Gold A’ Design Award in the Aerospace and Aircraft Design category. This accolade highlights its innovative approach to creating a UAV capable of extended-range missions and operations in challenging environments. The A’ Design Award program, which evaluates entries through a rigorous blind peer-review process, involves experts from design, aviation, and academia, thus placing the Hydrone Xc05 among the top selections in this competition.

The Hydrone Xc05 is engineered around hydrogen propulsion and autonomous flight technologies, boasting the capability to operate for up to three hours and cover distances exceeding 100 kilometers beyond visual line of sight. Designed to withstand harsh conditions, the UAV’s low-temperature technology enables it to function in environments as cold as -40°C. One of its standout features is a detachable fuel-cell system that facilitates a switch between hydrogen and electric propulsion, offering adaptability to various operational needs.

Incorporating advanced AI-based aviation models, the Hydrone Xc05 utilizes laser and visual navigation technologies to support autonomous flight without relying on continuous manual control or satellite signals. Constructed with a carbon-fiber airframe and an aerodynamic design, the aircraft’s foldable arms and landing gear significantly reduce its storage volume by about 70%, enhancing its portability and ease of deployment.

The development team behind this innovative aircraft includes Weiqiang Xu, Ding Gao, Qing Shi, Jian Wang, Zhigang Zeng, and Liang Cheng, who contributed to its engineering, system integration, and design. Tianmushan Laboratory, based in Zhejiang Province, China, is a research institution linked with Beihang University and its Sino-French School of Aeronautics. The laboratory focuses on green aircraft design, aviation propulsion, and advanced aerospace materials, among other areas.
