The Dutch company PAL-V has moved a step closer to introducing its flying car, the Liberty, to the commercial market. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted PAL-V the approval to start producing aviation components for this innovative vehicle. This marks a significant milestone as the company progresses towards the certification of the Liberty as a complete aircraft, a goal they aim to achieve by 2028.
The PAL-V Liberty is a unique blend of a road vehicle and an aircraft, featuring a retractable rotor and propeller. While it functions like a regular car on the ground, it transforms for flight by unfolding its rotor system. Unlike helicopters, the Liberty requires a runway for takeoff and landing, as it cannot lift off vertically. To operate the Liberty, users will need both a driving and a pilot’s license.
With a road speed capability of around 160 km/h and a flying range of approximately 500 km, the Liberty promises versatility for its users. The starting price for this groundbreaking vehicle is approximately €299,000, excluding taxes and additional costs. Despite the high price tag, interest in the Liberty has been strong, with the first 250 units already sold. Notably, the Dutch fire brigade is among the early adopters.
As PAL-V continues to work towards the final certification required for the Liberty’s aerial operation, the company remains optimistic about meeting its 2028 timeline. This certification would officially allow the flying car to take to the skies. Should all go according to plan, PAL-V’s flying cars could soon be a common sight above the roads, blending the future of transportation with the present day.
