In response to prolonged high temperatures and inadequate rainfall, Luxembourg has activated its first nationwide drinking water vigilance phase. This move aims to maintain drinking water reserves and avert further shortages amid increased water consumption and mounting pressure on public water supplies. Although the national initiative relies on voluntary efforts, some municipalities have imposed mandatory water-use restrictions to support the cause.
Esch-sur-Alzette is one of the municipalities enforcing these restrictions, which ban non-essential uses of water. Prohibited activities include washing cars outside of professional car washes, cleaning pavements and building exteriors, filling private swimming pools and decorative ponds, operating fountains without water recirculation, cooling food or drinks under running water, and watering parks, sports fields, and green spaces, except for newly planted areas. Businesses that depend on water for their operations are exempt, though violations of local rules could lead to fines between €25 and €250.
The Water Administration has also raised concerns over critically low river levels nationwide, prompting a prohibition on water extraction from rivers, with the exception of the Moselle River. Authorities across Luxembourg are urging residents to adopt water-saving habits such as taking shorter showers, running washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads, minimizing garden watering, and refraining from unnecessary outdoor water activities.
These conservation efforts are essential to prevent the imposition of more stringent restrictions should the dry conditions persist. Officials emphasize that collective action in conserving water resources can significantly contribute to alleviating the current pressure on the water supply system.
