WhatsApp Launches Usernames for Phone Number-Free Chatting Experience

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows users to reserve unique usernames, facilitating communication without the need to disclose phone numbers. This privacy-oriented update is set to be available globally later this year. Users currently have the opportunity to secure their preferred username in advance of the full rollout. Once activated, individuals can engage in conversations by sharing their usernames instead of providing their phone numbers.

To access this feature, users will need to update their WhatsApp application and navigate to Settings, then Account, and select Username. The company has assured that notifications will be sent out as the option becomes available in different regions. Unlike traditional social media services, WhatsApp will not offer a public directory for username searches. This means only those who know a user’s exact username can initiate contact, which is intended to help minimize spam and unsolicited messages.

Additionally, WhatsApp is implementing an optional username key feature, giving users greater control over who can initiate chats with them. Although the introduction of usernames offers a new layer of privacy and convenience, WhatsApp emphasizes that it remains an optional feature. Users who prefer can continue to use their phone numbers for communication.

This update is particularly advantageous for creators, businesses, and organizations aiming to maintain a uniform identity across Meta Platforms’ services. The option to reserve matching usernames across available platforms could enhance brand consistency and recognition for these users.
