Trump Announces Ukraine-Russia Energy Ceasefire; Zelenskyy Uninformed of Agreement

US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire agreement purportedly reached between Russia and Ukraine, claiming both nations agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he was not consulted about the arrangement and emphasized that Ukraine would only comply if Russia also ceased its strikes.

Trump’s announcement, made via social media, lacked specifics on the ceasefire’s implementation or timeline. Zelenskyy indicated Ukraine’s willingness to adhere to the agreement if Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to similar terms. This development follows disagreements between Washington and Kyiv regarding Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries. Trump had urged Ukraine to cease these attacks, whereas Zelenskyy insisted Russia must first stop targeting Ukrainian energy facilities.

Despite the ceasefire announcement, Zelenskyy reported ongoing Russian drone and airstrikes on Ukrainian infrastructure, including a thermal power station in Kharkiv and various gas and oil facilities. Tensions further escalated after Trump proposed easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports, a move he argued could lower fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections. Zelenskyy criticized this decision, warning it could bolster Russia’s war efforts.

Trump criticized Zelenskyy for his reluctance to make concessions, suggesting Ukraine required new leadership. Zelenskyy countered that leadership decisions rest with the Ukrainian people and hinted at potential elections if Russia agreed to a comprehensive 60-day ceasefire.

The ongoing dispute has sparked concern among Ukrainian officials and European allies over the US approach to resolving the conflict. Reports suggest Washington might use military procurement and economic incentives to pressure both Kyiv and Moscow towards a ceasefire. Ukraine maintains that its strikes on Russian oil facilities aim to disrupt Moscow’s war financing, while Russia’s continued bombardment of Ukrainian targets reinforces Kyiv’s demand for mutual ceasefire terms.

Zelenskyy has engaged with European and international leaders to bolster support for Ukraine, with several European leaders emphasizing the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia and calling for an immediate halt to attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The proposed ceasefire remains uncertain without confirmation of Russia’s agreement, highlighting ongoing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over the prerequisites for ending the war and securing lasting peace.
