Italy Records 80% of Europe’s West Nile Virus Cases, Death Toll Rises

Italy is experiencing the worst outbreak of West Nile Virus in Europe, accounting for nearly 80% of all confirmed cases this season. Health authorities have reported 274 infections nationwide, with 19 deaths linked to the mosquito-borne illness.

Experts caution that the outbreak is far from over, as cases are expected to climb further in the coming weeks. The seasonal peak is anticipated between late August and September, when conditions remain favorable for mosquito activity.

The surge in cases has raised public health concerns across Europe, but Italy remains the most severely affected. Authorities are urging residents to take preventive measures, such as avoiding mosquito bites and reducing stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.
