Trump accuses Canada of ‘interference,’ terminates trade talks

President Trump has terminated all trade talks with Canada, accusing the country of “interference” via a “fake” ad featuring Ronald Reagan .

“Canada cheated and got caught,” Trump wrote on truth social. He claimed the ad was a “fraudulent” attempt to influence US supreme court hearings on his tariffs.

The ad, launched by Ontario premier  Doug Ford, was a protest against the 35% US tariffs on Canadian  goods. It used a 1987 clip of Reagan warning against protectionism.

The ad has also been condemned by the Ronald Reagan  Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the former president’s comments and was used without permission.

The halt in talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, freezes a c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship and escalates the ongoing trade war.
