The APEC summit in South Korea will host a critical meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping on Thursday, as a new US tariff threat looms.
The US has threatened 100% tariffs on Chinese goods, effective November 1. This was in response to China’s new controls on rare earth mineral exports.
This tit-for-tat escalation has ended a recent period of calm and includes new US port fees and Chinese countermeasures.
Despite the high stakes, President Trump, speaking from Tokyo, was optimistic. “That’s a big meeting, and I think it’s going to work out very well,” he said.
Trump added that the meeting would be “fantastic” and that both leaders “have a lot to talk about.”
